Novel Seri Lima Sekawan - Enid Blyton

Seri Lima Sekawan adalah seri novel remaja petualangan karya Enid Blyton yang paling terkenal. Enid Blyton yang hidup di rentang tahun 1897 - 1968 menulis 21 buku tentang Julian, George, Dick dan Anna, kemudia dilanjutkan dengan banyak sequel-sequel oleh pengarang lain. Lima Sekawan atau dikenal aslinya sebagai Famous Five bercerita tentang empat bersaudara, Julian, Dick dan Anne Kirrin, bersama saudara sepupunya Georgina "George" Kirrin bersama si anjing Timmy. Keempat bersaudara plus Timmy kemudian sering berjumpa dengan petualangan-petualangan seru di masa musim liburan. Setiap buku Lima Sekawan bersetting musim liburan di mana keempat saudara tersebut pulang dari sekolah di boarding school, atau sekolah yang langsung ada asramanya.

Seri Lima Sekawan dikarang dari rentang tahun 1942 hingga 1963. Karakteristik yang paling terkenal dari seri ini sebenarnya ada di karakter George yang unik. Georgina yang sebenarnya adalah perempuan namun sangat ingin dikenal sebagai seorang laki-laki dan lebih senang dipanggil George. Julian adalah saudara tertua, Dick yang pemberani dan sisa Anna sebagai sosok feminim di serial ini. Seperti biasa , Enid Blyton menyusupkan berbagai tipe-tipe makanan yang disantap Lima Sekawan di sepanjang petualangan mereka.

Setelah Enid Blyton tidak lagi menulis Lima Sekawan, sequel paling terkenal ditulis oleh pengarang Prancis Claude Voilier, di mana seri karangan Claude ini diterjemahkan ke bahasa Indonesia dengan setingan novel separuh komik. Seri ini dianggap cukup canonical untuk Lima Sekawan, walaupun tetap karangan Enid Blyton tetap dianggap original oleh penggemar.

Famous Five being translated into Bahasa Indonesia under serial title "Lima Sekawan", literally Five Friends. All 21 first original books are translated. In Indonesia , all books by Claude Voilier also translated into semi graphic novel, with lots of illustrations inside. Famous Five considered the most popular Enid Blyton's, her flagship novel in Indonesia. All Indonesian books are retitled with more adventurous title, for example, Five Go Off to Camp are famously translated as "Hunting the Haunted Railway". Five on a Hike Together translated as "Secret of Treasure".

Novel Seri Petualangan - Enid Blyton

Ini adalah seri buku-buku petualangan karya pengarang Inggris yang sangat populer, Enid Blyton. Mari kita mulai dengan seri yang pertama, yaitu seri Petualangan atau di bahasa aslinya The Adventure Series.

Ada 8 buku di seri ini, sebetulnya Enid Blyton hanya merencanakan 6 buku, tapi setelah banyaknya permintaan dari penggemar, dua buku tambahan ditulisnya, yaitu Petualangan di Sirkus Asing dan Petualangan di Sungai Ajaib.

Seri Petualangan ini berkisah tentang 4 remaja:
Philip Mannering, Lucy-Ann Trent  usia 11, Jack Trent  usia 14, dan Dinah Mannering  usia 12. Philip dikenal sebagai remaja yang suka dengan binatang dan diyakini bisa "berkomunikasi" dengan hampir semua hewan. Ada juga Jack yang sangat gemar mengamati burung dan bercita-cita menjadi ornithologist, yaitu pakar burung. Dua remaja puteri yaitu Lucy-Ann dan Dinah, adiknya Philip. Lalu tokoh hewan disini adalah si Kiki, si burung kakaktua merah dengan jambul abu-abu.

Seri Petualangan berbeda dengan seri Lima Sekawan atau Pasukan Mau Tahu karena buku-bukunya lebih tebal sampai 300-400 halaman. Ceritanya juga lebih intensif dan berat, lebih cocok untuk remaja 10 tahun ke atas. Berikut daftar bukunya:

Enid Blyton's Adventure Series is one of her very popular books. They are much thicker than other series such as Famous Five or Five Find-Outers. The Adventure Series had been translated into Bahasa Indonesia with faithful translation of each title, but the Indonesian version added extra descriptive word to each title. For example, The Castle of Adventure translated to The Adventure in Hawk Castle, or The River Of Adventure translated to The Adventure of Magic River. All books translated in the '80s and read by many Indonesia young adult.

Petualangan di Puri Rajawali
Karena ingin mencari sarang rajawali, Philip, Jack, Dinah, Lucy-Ann, dan Kiki akhirnya tiba di puri di atas bukit. Dengan bantuan Tassie, mereka bahkan berhasil masuk ke puri tua yang angker itu. Ternyata puri itu tidak hanya angker, tapi juga misterius! Puri itu sudah lama tak berpenghuni. Tapi malam-malam ada isyarat lampu senter dari menara puri. Ada juga ruang tersembunyi di bawah tanah, dengan sederetan baju zirah menyeramkan, tempat tidur antik, dan pintu di balik permadani yang menuju lorong rahasia!

Dan kali ini Kiki yang cerewet mendapat saingan---Button, anak rubah yang cerdik. Kalau tak ada Button dan Tassie, entah apa jadinya dengan keempat anak yang terkurung di puri tua itu!

Petualangan di Sungai Ajaib
Sungai yang diarungi Philip, Jack, Dinah, dan Lucy-Ann mulanya kelihatan biasa saja.  Tiba-tiba arusnya menyeret mereka ke dalam petualangan paling aneh di antara sekian banyak yang sudah pernah mereka alami.  Sungai itu menghilang ke bawah tanah, dan kemudian anak-anak itu sampai di berbagai tempat yang serba menakjubkan.  Dan siapakah itu yang datang sambil mengetuk-ngetuk dinding yang terbentang di bawah tanah?

Petualangan di Laut Sunyi
Philip, Jack, Dinah, dan Luck-Ann gembira sekali mendapat kesempatan berlibur di kepulauan lepas pantai utara Inggris. Apalagi dalam liburan kali itu mereka tidak hanya ditemani Kiki si burung kocak dan konyol, tetapi juga Bill—yang sementara waktu memang harus “menghilang”, menghindari musuh-musuhnya.

Tetapi liburan yang menyenangkan itu segera berubah menjadi liburan yang menegangkan. Pesawat terbang misterius berkeliaran di sekitar kepulauan tersebut dan menjatuhkan sesuatu dari dalamnya. Ada orang yang datang ke Pulau Puffin—pulau yang menjadi pangkalan mereka. Orang itu menghancurkan mesin perahu dan pesawat pemancar di perahu mereka dan menculik Bill. Lebih gawat lagi badai kemudian menghancurleburkan perahu mereka.

Misteri apa yang sedang berlangsung di kepulauan lepas pantai utara Inggris itu? Bagaiman mereka bisa meloloskan diri dari Pulau Puffin? Dan juga, bagaimana mereka bisa menyelamatkan Bill dari cengkeraman penculiknya?

Petualangan di Pulau Suram
Philip, Jack, Dinah, dan Lucy-Ann yang berlibur ke Craggy-Tops sama sekali tidak mengira akan menjumpai begitu banyak hal yang mengejutkan.

Tinggal dalam sebuah rumah tua separuh bobrok di atas karang terjal sudah merupakan keasyikan tersendiri bagi mereka. Belum lagi ditambah dengan pelayan aneh berkulit hitam, Pulau Suram yang misterius, dengan tambang tembaga yang sudah lama terlupakan serta orang-orang yang bekerja secara rahasia di sana, lorong-lorong rahasia, dan sebuah lorong di bawah laut!

Semuanya membuat petualangan yang dialami keempat anak itu bukan hanya menegangkan, tapi juga penuh bahaya.

Dan Kiki, burung kakaktua Jack yang selalu berbicara kocak, membuat petualangan itu semakin seru.


Petualangan di Gunung Bencana
Jack, Philip, Dinah, dan Lucy-Ann terpaksa harus pergi berkemah sendiri ke Lembah Kupu-kupu, diantar oleh Pak David, pemilik keledai-keledai yang mereka tunggangi. Bill dan Bu Mannering tidak jadi ikut, karena sehari sebelum berangkat, Bu Mannering mendapat cedera di tangannya.

Suasana liburan berubah ketika kabut tebal datang, dan mereka tersesat keluar dari jalur arah Lembah Kupu-kupu. Mau tidak mau mereka harus berkemah di suatu lembah yang tidak mereka ketahui namanya. Alangkah terkejutnya mereka ketika menemukan bahwa di tempat itu berkeliaran sekawanan serigala! Aneh sekali, karena sudah sejak lama di daerah pegunungan itu tidak pernah lagi ada serigala.

Ketegangan semakin memuncak tatkala Pak David dan keledai-keledainya lari meninggalkan mereka, setelah ia berteriak, “Hitam, hitam!” Banyak kejadian misterius di gunung itu, di antaranya suara gemuruh dan asap kemerah-merahan yang keluar dari perut gunung, tanah yang bergetar—padahal gunung itu bukan gunung berapi.

Apakah yang sedang terjadi di dalam gunung itu? Apakah yang dilihat oleh Pak David, sehingga ia begitu ketakutan? Akan pernah sampaikah mereka ke Lembah Kupu-kupu yang mereka tuju?...

Petualangan di Lembah Maut
Lembah maut... lembah petualangan! Baik Jack, Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann, maupun Kiki, tak ada yang menyangka mereka akan terdampar di lembah tanpa penghuni itu. Mereka sebetulnya hanya akan pesiar di malam hari, dengan pesawat Bill. Tapi mereka keliru naik pesawat penjahat! Dan tanpa sepengetahuan para penjahat, mereka terbawa ke lembah maut. Betul mereka kemudian berhasil meloloskan diri dari pesawat. Dan bahkan berhasil menemukan gua harta yang sudah lama dicari-cari para penjahat. Tapi apa gunanya, jika akhirnya mereka sendiri malah terperangkap dalam gua itu?...

Petualangan di Sirkus Ajaib
Empat Sekawan—Jack, Philip, Dinah, dan Lucy-Ann—terlibat petualangan menegangkan dengan Gussy, tamu mereka yang aneh dan tingkahnya selalu menimbulkan teka-teki.  Siapa dia, anak lelaki yang suka marah-marah dan memerintah ini? Dialah yang menyebabkan selruh keluarga terlibat dalam keadaan sulit dan berbahaya—puri dan sirkus di negeri asing, lorong-lorong rahasia, melarikan diri di tengah malam—dan hal-hal lain yang lebih seru.

Petualangan di Kapal Pesiar
Baik Philip, Dinah, Jack, maupun Lucy-Ann tidak mengira bahwa perjalanan mereka dengan kapal pesiar Viking Star akan membawa mereka ke dalam suatu petualangan baru yang mene­gangkan.

Ketika mereka singgah di Pulau Amulis, Lucy-Ann membeli hiasan kapal dalam botol sebagai hadiah ulang tahun Philip. Kapal petualangan!—Ya, kapal-kapalan itu ternyata sudah tua sekali umurnya dan di dalamnya terdapat peta kuno—peta yang membawa mereka ke pulau mati—kota kuno yang rusak—penelusuran jalan harta—menuju harta Andra!

Sayang, bukan hanya mereka yang tahu tentang harta Andra tersebut. Walaupun peta kuno itu telah dibagi empat oleh Jack dan masing-masing menyimpan potongan tersebut baik-baik, toh orang lain yang juga menginginkan peta tersebut berhasil melihat dua potongan peta.

Dapatkah Jack, Philip, Dinah. Lucy-Ann—dan tentu saja Bill Smugs—mencapai harta Andra yang tersembunyi di bawah kota kuno itu? Atau sudah kedahuluan oleh orang lain?

A One-Woman Book Factory

ENID BLYTON, the children's Edgar Wallace, has published a complete list of her books. Her fans have to pay 6d. for it. It shows that this prodigious yarn-spinner, still in her forties, has 250 books in print. She estimates that  altogether she has written some 300.

When Edgar Wallace died at nearly 57, his output had reached 170. Wallace's daily 12,000 words were put on paper with the help of two lightning secretaries and a dictaphone.

Enid Blyton uses no such aids. She sits on a chintz-covered swing couch in her garden at Beaconsfield with a portable typewriter on her knee, and the story pours from the production line at the rate of 10,000 words a day (15,000 at full pressure).

She has six books at the proof stage to correct. She has just finished writing another, a nature book begun six days ago. ("I just worked on it at odd times.")

Letters arrive from children all over the world and she answers every one in her own hand. ("Children would not care for typewritten letters.") Her 23 publishers also get handwritten letters-pages of them on both sides of the paper-detailing all the preliminary business.

She Is A Company

SOMETIMES the business is complex but mere legal intricacies never defeat this one-woman book factory. She calls in no lawyers; herself drafted the standard contract (15 per cent royalties for herself except in special circumstances when she may reduce it for the sake of getting better presentation) which she imposes on all her publishers alike.

One stipulation she makes-no niggling about numbers. The first edition must be 25,000, or the deal is off. Several of her books have sold more than 1,000,000 copies. How much does she make? ' Far more than the £10,000 a year usually estimated. Probably nearer the £50,000 which Edgar Wallace was said to get.

"I don't know exactly," she says, looking her quizzer straight in the eye.

Like other individuals making a lot of money, Enid Blyton has turned herself into a limited company. That, she says, takes care of the receiving end. ("You see, the children's appreciation is my real reward.")

2 1\2 Per Cent

HER book of children's prayers, "Before I Go to Sleep," brings in £300 to £500 a year, she says. That is one cheque she does not receive. It goes to a children's charity. Add to her income from the 250 children's books her 2 1/2 per cent royalties from all the commercial products to which the Enid Blyton name is lent-diaries, writing paper, jigsaws. Not to mention the card and board games she devises as a sideline. Plus royalties on over 200 school readers and other educational textbooks, lt's a dizzy sum.

Sometimes a snooty critic lashes at the Blyton books. Sometimes a children's librarian wails that his clients are too Blytonised to read Dickens. Enid Blyton types serenely on. "I am not a malicious person' says she.

She started to write as a schoolgirl in Beckenham, where she was born, treasures a collection of 500 rejection slips. Her first published work was a love poem in "Nash's Magazine," for which 16-year-old Enid got one guinea.

She was a competent pianist, and her father disapproved of the writing; planned a musical career. Instead, she broke away and took the Froebel training, taught in a kindergarten.

("I always loved children and was happiest in their company.")

She burst into authorship when, as a student, a publisher paid her £72 down for a set of six English readers for schools.

Subconscious Cinema

SHE sits down at her typewriter without plot or synopsis. Figures, she says, appear before" her eyes as on a cinema screen. They move, they talk, they sing their own original tunes. Other characters appear: the story unfolds. "All I have to do is to type it out as fast as I can," says Enid Blyton. She reckons that she must have a singularly obliging subconscious mind.

Some of her child readers seek her out at Beaconsfield; she has met thousands of others at meetings organised by booksellers and publishers.

At home she is Mrs. Kenneth Darrell Waters, wife of a surgeon, mother of two daughters, one an art student at St. Andrew's University and the other at boarding-school. Her two servant house is well-ordered: so is her 3-acre garden, kept by the gardener aided by the chaffeur. "One of my extravagances," she said indicating a thousand bush roses in beds laid out round a pool.

She has a big Daimler, but she prefers driving herself around in her small, fast, green saloon. Her husband drives to his hospital in a Rolls.

Golf, Bridge, T.V.

SHE is angered by suppositions that she spent a lot of money buying Studland Bay golf course. "My husband bought it," she says. Both are keen golfers: play twice a week. They also enjoy tennis on their own hard court, play bridge, watch TV, work in the garden. With all her colossal output, Enid Blyton is no slave to her art.

In a smart new black dress, she took time off to spend Gold Cup Day at Ascot, with her husband and elder daughter Gillian. Quite a step from the old days when she taught in a Baptist Sunday school at Beckenham. World Copyright Reserved

Enid Blyton Revisit, Rare Story and Photos (Part 1)

As writer with such gigantic output, Enid Blyton can be found in many newspaper articles. Using digital archived sites, I had found some interesting Enid Blyton report and photos, that may be a rarity. At least, couldn't find it at google. Here some of the findings.

Enid Blyton, who died six years ago,remains one of the world's best known and most popular writers of children's stories. But what was the real person like behind the name on

the book-jacket?

To MOST people. Enid Blyton was the outwardly kindly, twinkling, industrious creator of lovable little Noddy,  who devoted her life to the world's children through her 600 books. But to some of those closer to her. she was an extremely unsentimental, embittered egocentric who lived out her life in a fantasy world of her own making because she couldn't stand the harshness of the real world. Both these faces of Enid Blyton are revealed in a startling biography of one of the world's most successful and most controversial authors, recentlv published in London. So secretive was she about parts of her early life (she was born over a shop in South East London, daughter of a Sheffield cutlery salesman) that even Enid Blyton's elder daughter, (Gillian Baverstock, was fascinated when she read the book to discover a lot she didn't previously know. 

Gillian, who is married to television executive Donald Baverstock. and lives in a Tudor manor in Yorkshire, is a warm, outgoing woman of immense charm. She talked to me with great candor about her mother and their relationship. How. as a young girl, she dared not interrupt her mother when she was writing, and was allowed to sec her for only one hour a day. How her mother's early were filled with sadness, something her readers were probablv never aware of. She told me of how Enid Blyton was inseparable from her father, who taught her all he knew of nature, music, and poetry, and how she was shocked rigid when her parents' shaky marriage collapsed and he walked out when she was 12. Of how she blamed her mother for this and rarely, if ever, saw her again after she left home at 19 to train as a teacher even refusing to visit her when she was dying, avoiding her funeral because she was "too busy." In spite of her huge success her annual income was estimated at $200,000 she had problems in adult life, too. Her first marriage ended in divorce, she had miscarriages, and not much talent for human relationships outside her children.

Yet none of this ever came through her writing, which (lowed implacably from her pen like the stream from a punctured bag of sugar. "She lived on two levels. I'm sure." said Gillian

"She probably retreated to this magic world of hers to escape the unpleasantness of her teenage home and stayed there. 

"I'm no psychologist but I'd be fascinated to think what she might have written if her world hadn't been shattered at 13 and she hadn't had such a sad time. "It affected her so profoundly, that when her own first marriage was breaking up to my father she tried to conceal from my sister and myself that there was a break-up. She didn't want us to suffer the traumas she had gone through.

"So my father left to go to America during the war and that was the last time I saw him. "He died two years ago. two weeks after we had traced him. Oh how I would because I know now how very fond he was of me."

Enid Blyton was adamant in refusing the girls' father access to his daughters, indeed they were not told that he had asked it. "And I have no idea why." said Gillian Baverstock. clearly baffled. "She never talked to me about it and I couldn't begin to explain her reasoning. Her father was allowed to come back and take her out after he left home. But I know she always went home desperately sad that he wasn't still living with them.

"She probably thought a complete break was better for us I know she worried because he drank but now that I know how he loved me it does seem very, very hard that she didn't allow us to meet."

Was she, then, two people? "She had two sides, yes. The ordinary, happy woman who enjoyed her family, and the writer who had to have peace, who could not bear the flow of her mind being interrupted. "liven as a small child one absolutely did not go down to her when she was working. except in an emergency. She was writing up to ten thousand words a day. of course. We only saw her after tea for an hour, and this was rigidly adhered to. "She didn't have much to do with our day-to-day lives, and we had to play jolly quietly in the garden if she was working there or she would be very annoyed."

Had she not then felt it rather a bitter irony that what kept them apart was the precise fact of her mother's spending eight hours a day to delight other people's children?

"Oh absolutely." Gillian smiled ruefully. "I've always "And yet that hour I had with her each day i recall as being the happiest part of life the country walks, the picking wildflowers, the gardening together, the witty amusing stories she told me.

"All those sunsets and birdsongs she wrote about genuinely meant a lot to her and this she gave to me.

"She gave me sufficient in order to continue myself. To give someone a love of something, be it nature or music, you give them a great gift. "That is the important thing. And although her work kept us apart, I did have the great joy of sitting on her knee and hearing the stories as they were written."

I remarked that her mother did sound unsentimental to me. Was this judgment fair? "I think it is. She did cut ties fairly easily, as you see. lt all goes back to her childhood and her dislike of her mother.

"She told me that her mother was jealous of her closeness to her father. What she failed to tell me was that her mother was still alive. "I thought she'd died years before I was born. In fact I think she told me she had died, so I had no idea she was alive somewhere in a nursing home.

"This was at the root of her unsentimentally. That the tie that should have been so great between mother and daughter never existed." Enid Blyton may not have been able to communicate with her mother but she had the unique gift of being able to tune in absolutely to the child's wavelength, through her stories. Her daughter feels this is because she saw the world as a child sees it.

 "People criticise mother for being so very simple, but in the end this is why children are able to enjoy her. Because they could enter her world without difficulty.

"A part of herself remained child-like. That is why she could still enjoy a sunset or the first snowdrop coming out: unlike most grown-ups she never lost the ability to enjoy as a child does, the sweetness of a moment

"And she knew, as well as anyone in the world, how to communicate this, that was her secret."

Ultimate Soccer Team of the '90s

The era of '90s saw tremendous football / soccer popularity. Starting from World Cup '90 in Italy, where Roberto Baggio, Romario, Juergen Klinsmann trying to cope the historic Diego Maradonna legacy from his 1986 moment. Then we saw 1994 World Cup in USA and 1998 World Cup in French. Many legends rise and fall in this era of football. We talk about European football scene, AC Milan, Juventus, the rise of Manchester United in the late '90 and Spaniards : Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Here the eleven legendary football players I've selected as the ultimate soccer team of the '90s. Of course this is so personal and based on my favorites.
